Buletin Utama TV3, The Story of Malaysian Media

I never wrote a blog twice a day, indeed I never did. But this time, something really pissed me off and prompted me to take a pen, do some writing on a piece of paper then sign in to blogspot and started to write again. I hope this is one of the current issue that my father hoped I start writing about. This issue had pissed me off long ago, the unfair coverage of Malaysian media. Since I always forgive and forget, I could not remember why they pissed me off in the past. But this time, I am really pissed and they made a big mistake now because I have a new blog to write in.

Every day on 7.00pm, I always eat dinner in my room watching Buletin Utama Online, the main news on TV3 which is a Malaysian television cable. This news are actually aired at 8.00pm in Malaysia. I love to watch Malaysian news not because they are the best news around, but it keeps me updated about what's going on back home. At least I got to hear somebody speaks Malay everyday in an English-speaking country.

So today, 17 February 2009 I surfed TV3 online to watch them. The main headline was about a People Justice Party (PKR) state assemblywoman who had semi-nude pictures being taken while she was sleeping and circulated by somebody unidentified yet. For your information PKR is one of the opposition party. What irks me so much is that everybody were blaming the female politician about morality and urging her to resign. Why can't everyone see the big picture? The problem here is someone taking her picture while she was sleeping without her permission and trying to circulate it around. Why can't everybody see who should be blame?

TV3 news report did not only offered her no help, but they also trying to stirred things up. I give you 3 quotations that the news anchor said in the prime time news. I don't make these up, these are the real extract from the bulletin on 17/2/2009.

"... tertidur dengan kain terselak serta terdedah..."
(sleeping with upskirts and exposed)
"...tertidur dengan kain terselak dan kaki terkangkang..."
(sleeping with upskirts and opened legs)
"...terbaring dengan kain terselak..."
(lying down with upskirts)

These are the exact wording of the news anchor and the news was aired on prime time. Why should they offer those details? Who really needs to know that? Does young people watching the news needs to know that? Or are they taking the opportunity to gave the poor politician a really good bashing?

Not only that, my I lost my cool when TV3 took another step by actually airing parts of the pictures. Okay, right now we know that there were 2 very inappropriate pictures of the politicians being circulated. But is it appropriate to broadcast the pictures on the news itself? Why are they so desperate to help those culprits in exposing the pictures to all Malaysian people? Well they could argue the picture was edited to be deemed appropriate for all, but are these really necessary?

This one appeared for 10 seconds while the anchor was saying the third quotation in the previous paragraph.

This one appeared for a whopping 40 seconds while the anchor stuttered to delivers her line.

Then TV3 also tried to find counter arguments to everything that PKR said. When the PKR said there is no morality issue in this case, they got a very "expert" opinion from a president of a students association. When PKR presidents said that this issue being stirred up by the goverment of National Front (BN), they got counter arguments from 2 BN MP. When PKR did not demand immediate resignation from that politician, they got another opinion from a BN-supporting Independent MP. Why don't they let PKR to speak for themselves first before getting opinions from their political rivals? And why the heck bother interviewing a president from a students association?

Maybe in the society I am living now, those insensitivities are taken lightly. But as a Malaysian, this issue was very sensitive. Revealing stories are very unusual in our media and in a normal circumstances, all of these insensitivities will be edited out from a prime time media. This issue only worth to be written in tabloids or gossip columns. Why make it a national issue, sensatise the story, reveal details in the nation's most watched cable news, even exposing parts of the pictures for all Malaysian to have a peek at? Do they finally realised that sex actually sells? Or they knew that kissing ass was very good for their health?

  1. GPMS is not a real student association. The current president Rizal Merican Naina merican, also holding a post in Pemuda UMNO, Chief of Economic Planning something like that. It's funny, Rizal Merican always offer his opinion from Umno point of view but TV3 keep labelling it as "opinion from GPMS". Maybe GPMS itself is one of UMNO wing.

  2. How I see it, main stream media in malaysia is government-controlled. So basicly it feeds the society almost what ever the gov wants to 'feed' us.. Even when its wrong sometimes..

  3. Assalamualaikum/ salam sejahtera,

At last I found a blog that I can access to ventilate my inner turmoil today. Best of all I think I have found a blog at my wavelength. I wish to share this message to as many Malaysian as possible. My English sucks. Actual message will be in Bahasa Melayu, Malaysian official language.
